Youth Exchange
As last year, Toronto Cathay Lions Club supports Youth Exchange Program. Last Year we invited the youth to our Club meeting. This year we donated $300.00 to this program. Members including Region Chair Dundas Kwok and Secretary Raymond Young attended the opening event.
The Youth Camp and Exchange Program (YCE) brings the ideal of global citizenship to life. Each year this program gives thousands of young people the opportunity to experience life in other cultures and gain new understanding of the world through travel abroad. Unlike some youth exchange programs, YCE does not involve academic study or employment. Instead, participants are encouraged to use this travel opportunity to represent their home countries and share their own culture while learning about and embracing a new one, forging the way to becoming young ambassadors for peace and international understanding.

History of Toronto Cathay Lions Club
The Toronto Cathay Lions Club is a part of Lions Clubs International, a network of volunteers who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Toronto Cathay Lions Club was chartered in 1975.
The Charter Night of Toronto Cathay Lions Club was taken place at Sheraton Hotel in Downtown Toronto in May 10, 1975. About 400 guests attended the event. The then Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Ambassador M. Cadieux sent Congratulatory Messages. The then Mayor of Toronto David Crombie was the guest speaker. A Low Vision Mobile Van was donated to University of Waterloo to celebrate this special occasion.
To date, three of these original Charter Members are still with us and we are very proud to have them: Past District Governor and Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow Dr. Kai Ming Kan, Past President Kit Wong and Past President James Lee. All three of them are Life Members. We are pleased to announce that we have altogether ten Life Members : Bill Cheung, Kai Ming Kan, Jackie Lai, James Lee, Raymond Lee, Suny Lui, Matthew Lyn, Diamond Tam, Kit Wong and Frank Woo.
Since its inception in 1975, The Toronto Cathay Lions Club has worked hard in fulfilling its commitment of serving our community. We have initiated fundraising activities for various organizations such as nursing homes, hospitals, universities, Chinese Schools, Chinese Cultural Centre, medical research, Royal Ontario Museum, the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association and as far away as the schools in China, and needy people in Haiti, Thailand, Japan and Nepal. We provide Scholarships to University of Toronto and York University.
Since year 2000 our cumulative contributions to SickKids Foundation exceeded $170,000.00. In 2006, Toronto Cathay Lions Club donated a pledge payment of $15,000, the final payment toward our commitment of $25,000 to the Royal Ontario Museum.
Toronto Cathay Lions Club's contribution to the Mon Sheong Foundation was recognised as the "PARTNER" level of the Donor Wall in Mon Sheong's Richmond Hill Long Term Care Centre and was honoured with the naming of the Front Entrance Vestibule of the Long Term Care Centre.
We also actively participate in and support similar charitable functions organized by other community groups. Recently, we are the Gold Sponsor for Planting a Tree Event at Richmond Green organized by the Chinese Family Services of Ontario and we have sponsored the School Battery Retrieval Program focuses on educating and promoting awareness of a clean and sustainable future for our next generation.
Early this year, Our Club donated 3,000 pairs of brand new reading glasses to Uganda for international humanitarian reasons. This marks a mile stone for Lions International by donating brand new reading eyeglasses instead of recycled ones during the past years. Recently our Club donated more than $2,000.00 to Nepal Earthquake Fund through Lions International.
For detail please read the information under PAST EVENTS.
Over the long span of almost four decades, Toronto Cathay Lions Club successfully raised over 2 million dollars.
Toronto Cathay Lions Club was the Sponsor Club of Toronto Elegant Lions Club in 1993.
In year 2014, we sponsored the charter of Toronto Oriental Lions Club.
Press Release
Donation of Eyeglasses to Uganda
Chance Meeting Promises Chance to Read for Thousands in Uganda
A chance encounter by an escalator at the Metro Convention Centre last summer has brought the chance of improved eyesight within the reach of some 3,000 people in Uganda.
Stuck briefly in a crowd at a Lions Club International Convention in Toronto, Lion Raija Rosenthal, a Past District Governor, asked Lion Dr. Charles B.R. Ibingira, a Uganda delegate, "How can we help?"
"There's a tremendous need for eyeglasses," replied Dr. Ibingira, a Surgeon and Dean at the School of Biomedical Sciences at Makerere University in Kampala in Uganda.
"Would 3,000 pairs help?" asked Rosenthal.
End result of that brief exchange: At a press conference on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 10:30 am. at the Ugandan Consulate in Toronto, Lion Matthew Lyn, President of Toronto Cathay Lions Club will announce that Toronto Cathay Lions Club has purchased 3,000 pairs of reading glasses in the value of more than $10,000.00 CAD and will pay for their shipment to Uganda.
It was Helen Keller, the blind activist, who originally called on Lions Club members to be "Knights of the Blind," a theme still echoed in Lions' "Sight First" worldwide initiative to help the visually impaired.
Canadian Lions collect thousands of pairs of used eyeglasses today which are cleaned, repaired and shipped from Quebec to third world countries. But the Toronto Cathay Lions Club, which counts many former Hong Kong Chinese among its members, went a step further: by purchasing new reading glasses of specified magnification it made the provision of correct glasses for thousands of sufferers quicker and more efficient.
Lion Jotham Tugumisirize, President of the Kampala Central Lions Club, has responded with gratitude to the Toronto Cathay club, calling its members, "Knights of the Blind." He is hopeful the glasses will arrive in time for distribution at two upcoming camps to aid many of Uganda's sight impaired.

Protect our Youth, Protect our Environment,
Ensure a better living environment for our future generations
Our Club has sponsored Planting a tree Event and School Battery Retrieval and Competition Program.
National Tree Day.
National Tree Day will serve as a celebration for all Canadians to appreciate the
great benefits that trees provide us - clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy
demand and connecting with nature. This year, National Tree Day takes place
on Wednesday September 24.
On Saturday September 27, 2014, Chinese Family Services of Ontario is organizing
a fundraising activity – “Plant a Tree” to echo the same mission of National Tree Day.
Toronto Cathay Lions Club is proud to be the Gold Sponsor for this Plant a Tree Event.
The Benefits of the Urban Forest.
• Removing carbon dioxide from the air and replacing it with oxygen, slowing global warming.
• Reducing air pollution by absorbing harmful chemicals
• Replenishing our groundwater supply by reducing storm-water runoff and allowing water to soak into the surrounding soil
• Giving people a psychological boost – studies show they make us feel good.
• Providing an urban habitat for wildlife
• Softening neighbourhood noise
• Improving public safety
加國植樹節

School Battery Retrieval Program and Competition.
Toronto Cathay Lions Club is a proud sponsor of the School Battery Retrieval Program and Competition.
Batteries and our environment
When batteries run out of energy they often get placed into the trash. Batteries are considered a hazardous waste and therefore should be disposed of correctly.
Once a battery is in the waste stream, it becomes difficult to separate. Consequently, it is sent to landfill with other non-recyclable products. Over time, the battery decomposes and dangerous chemicals seep into the ground, and potentially into our water supplies.
Canadians understand the importance of protecting the environment. Initiative to maximize recycling and minimize waste has become a valuable responsibility for Canada. Through programs like EcoWatch Canada, we can share the knowledge to help you understand about potential hazards that can harm the environment, and educate people on how to manage harmful waste through the use of recycling and proper disposal.

Brief History of Lions International
1917: The Beginning Chicago business leader Melvin Jones asked a simple and world-changing
question – what if people put their talents to work improving their communities? Almost 100 years later, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization, with more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs and countless stories of Lions acting on the same simple idea: let's improve our communities.
1920: Going International Just three years after our founding, Lions became international when we established the first club in Canada. Mexico followed in 1927. In the 1950s and 1960s international growth accelerated, with new clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa.
1925: Eradicating Blindness Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA, and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since then, we have worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired.
1945: Uniting Nations The ideal of an international organization is exemplified by our enduring relationship with the United Nations. We were one of the first nongovernmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United Nations Charter and have supported the work of the UN ever since.
1990: Launching SightFirst Through SightFirst, Lions are restoring sight and preventing blindness on a global scale. Launched in 1990, Lions have raised more than $415 million for this initiative. SightFirst targets the major causes of blindness: low vision, trachoma, river blindness, childhood blindness, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
Today: Extending Our Reach Lions Clubs International has impacted the lives of millions all over the world. Through our signature projects, we are able to help in the areas of sight, health, youth, the elderly, the environment and disaster relief. We serve in more than 200 countries and geographic areas around the globe.
There are many reasons to become a member. As a Lion, you will:
• Help your community and gain valuable skills
• Make an impact on people's lives – locally and internationally
• Learn to be a leader – and lead a respected organization
• Network with business people in your community and around the world
• Energize your life and have fun

National Anthem
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

Lions Songs
***Hail, Hail, The Lions Are Here***
Hail, Hail, The Lions are here,
Don't you hear them roaring?
Don't you hear them roaring?
Hail, Hail, The Lions are here,
Don't you hear them roaring now?
***I’ve got that Lion spirit***
I’ve got that Lion spirit up in my head,
Up in my head, up in my head,
I’ve got that Lions spirit up in my head,
Up in my head, today.
I’ve got that Lion spirit right in my heart,
Up in my heart, right in my heart,
I’ve got that Lions spirit right in my head,
Right in my heart, today.
I’ve got that Lion spirit down in my feet,
Down in my feet, down in my feet
I’ve got that Lions spirit down in my feet,
Down in my feet, today.
I’ve got that Lion spirit all over me,
All over me, all over me,
I’ve got that Lions spirit all over me,
All over me, today
I’ve got that Lion spirit all over me,
All over me, all over me,
I’ve got that Lions spirit all over me,
All over me, today
